A Square of Life is a piece of land you choose in your backyard, the schoolyard, or in your neighborhood that you measure, observe, and study very intensely for insect life and habitat.

  1. Choose your piece of land. It can be 5 ft. x 5 ft., 10 ft. x 10 ft., or any reasonable size.
  2. Mark your square with stakes and string.
  3. Record the insect life in your square with a digital camera, camera, or video camera.
  4. Keep a daily field journal of observations of insects that you see and hear. Study carefully habitat, actions, how the insects move about, capture prey, build homes, or just rest.
  5. Use the spreadsheet template to organize your data from field observations.
