A Square of Life is a piece of land you choose in your backyard, the schoolyard, or in your neighborhood that you measure, observe, and study very intensely for insect life and habitat.
- Choose your piece of land. It can be 5 ft. x 5 ft., 10 ft. x 10 ft., or any reasonable size.
- Mark your square with stakes and string.
- Record the insect life in your square with a digital camera, camera, or video camera.
- Keep a daily field journal of observations of insects that you see and hear. Study carefully habitat, actions, how the insects move about, capture prey, build homes, or just rest.
- Use the spreadsheet template to organize your data from field observations.
