Overview and Benefits
Design and Discovery offers an inquiry and interdisciplinary approach to engineering. Students are introduced to engineering principles and guided through the design process, as they identify a personally meaningful problem and develop a prototype to solve the problem. Design and Discovery engages students who might otherwise not be interested in science and engineering and prepares them for science and engineering fairs. It is most appropriate for informal education settings. Learn more about the benefits of Design and Discovery and its impact on students.
Curriculum
Design and Discovery is a complete hands-on curriculum with facilitator's directions and student handouts. The curriculum consists of 18 sequential sessions that are each 2.5 hours long. Each session has two to four hands-on activities, which average 45 minutes each. The curriculum follows the design process, taking students from identifying a design opportunity to developing a working prototype. Design and Discovery is not an online curriculum; it is meant to be downloaded and printed. It can be reproduced and given to students. Printable versions of the curriculum are available in PDF.
Program Examples
Design and Discovery can be implemented in a variety of settings—as an after-school club, a summer enrichment program, or as part of a science curriculum. See how Design and Discovery has been successful in different circumstances and read about adaptations that others have made to fit their particular needs. Also, view student project examples to inspire your students.
Implementation Strategies
Involving mentors, taking field trips, and scheduling are just a few of the considerations when implementing Design and Discovery. Implementation Strategies provides detailed information for planning a program, facilitating a program, and information about science and engineering fair opportunities for students.
